As can be seen from the diagram, as the point changes, it acts as a switch, changing the frog polarity. This assumes that the point blades are doing the power routing. |

If we feed power in after the point on the main route, then it can be seen that there will be a short circuit which will trip out the controller, hopefully, otherwise it could blow the controller. | |
As the diagram show, with a single rail break, there is no short circuit and the locomotive or engine will continue to operate correctly. | |

If a third power feed is needed on the upper route, then another single rail break is required. |
